What happens if you don’t wash all the dye out of your hair?

What happens if you don’t wash all the dye out of your hair

If you don’t want your hair to look color patched when you go and wash the dye out of your hair, then you have to follow some steps. If you follow some proper steps while washing away the hair dye, then you wouldn’t end up having half colored hair, I promise.

Hair dyes can be uncertain sometimes. The end result of a dye depends on your hair quality, the quality of the dye you are using, and the kind of shampoo you use to wash the excess dye of your hair. Sometimes the water you use to wash your hair can be blameable, but that depends on which part of the world you are in. Some places have heavy water infused with minerals and can cause damage to your hair and your recent hair color.

Another thing is that you can make mistakes when dyeing your hair for the first time and in that situation, it is very vital to wash away the color as quickly as possible to be able to dye it again.

Sometimes, because of the closed hair cuticles, color pigments get deposited in the hair, and thus dye doesn’t get out of the hair properly when you try to wash it.

What happens if you don’t wash all the dye out of your hair?

what happens if you dont wash your hair

If you don’t wash the dye completely out of your hair then your hair will easily become dry, dull, and flat because of all the remaining color deposits in your hair. Your hair color might even end up being changed if the dye is left behind. When you apply a darker shade of color and then the dye doesn’t get out of your hair fully, then the color turns into a lighter shade of the same.

Your hair may start to stink because of the remaining dye in your hair and your hair will become very hard. You will basically get thick and dirty hair.

The main reason behind such a condition is the amount of chemicals present in the dye and the worst chemical among them is ammonia. Ammonia is the main reason for having stiff and opaque hair and also causes the smell. Even if you try hard to cover the smell using artificial fragrances but it continues to remain in your hair for a long.

How many times should I wash my hair to get rid of the hair dye?

You can get rid of semi-permanent dyes usually after 1 wash if you follow the steps properly. On the other hand, the permanent dyes may take a few weeks until they are ready to be washed off your hair. The steps we are discussing here are applicable to most of the dyes available in the market. There is no secret mantra to it. You can use these 3 basic steps to get rid of the unwanted dye completely.

  1. Create emulsion on your scalp
  2. Shampoo your hair
  3. Condition it properly

Emulsion In this process we wet our hair with lukewarm water and gently massage our hair and the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes. This emulsion process helps to remove any sort of stains from the hair and scalp.

Thoroughly wash your hair till the last drop of colored water comes out of your hair. Next its time for a proper shampoo. In our blog, I always suggest my readers, to use a sulfate-free shampoo and apply it properly using your fingers over your scalp. Make sure you cover all areas. Rub smoothly it for 5 mins and wash it off. Don’t rub too much or you may end up damaging your own hair follicles. I use this shampoo and conditioner combo. At the end-use a conditioner that is specially made to use after coloring hair. Click here to check out the conditioner I use from Amazon, every time I color my hair. Using this conditioner will make your hair more flexible and glamorous.

Can I wash my hair dye out in the shower?

Can I wash my hair dye out in the shower

Most processes implemented in cleaning the hair dye out of your hair is best done in hot water as I have mentioned earlier that Emulsion is the process to wash our hair with lukewarm water. In modern homes, most showers get hot water and cold water, both but the best way to wash out color from your hair would be a hot shower as using tap water can be messy with the whole color draining here and there.

A warm shower keeps the whole process clean and mess-free as the flowing water keeps on removing the dye and putting it out through the drain. Make sure that the excess dyes don’t gather in the corners of the shower area as it can be tough to remove it later, otherwise this is the best process to go with.

Emulsification is the most crucial step in the whole process and if done in a hot shower will give the best results! Your dye will come out with a lot of ease.

Hot water vs Coldwater: Which one will be best to wash away hair dye?

Hot water vs Coldwater

If you have access to hot water in your house shower then it would be best to use a hot shower for the process of removing the dye from your hair.

Always avoid using cold water for the same process as cold water would make your hair drier, dull, and above all the dye would still be there in your hair. The emulsification process will require hot water because that is actually the main step for removing the dye from the hair.

Also while using Shampoo and conditioner you should use lukewarm water from the shower.

Does wetting your hair fade color?

Wetting your hair will not fade your hair color completely but you will see a notable change in the hair color.

While it is thought that shampoo can be the most harmful for your dyed hair, water also has some serious effects. Stay away from water as much as possible if you want to keep the new hair color intact for a long time.

If I wet my hair, does it count as washing?

Wetting your hair never counts as washing because washing hair involves shampooing and conditioning.

Wetting your hair can have bad impacts rather than doing any good. Wetting the hair will make the color deposits stick to your scalp and hair rather than getting removed. Water is not as affecting as shampoo while it comes to take the impurities out of the hair, so just washing your hair with water doesn’t add any value.

Most of the people unknowingly use water to wet their hair before they start styling for better hair shape. I will always suggest to avoid it if you have hair dye in your hair.

Should I use shampoo to wash out hair dye?

what happens if you don't wash your hair

Yes. Unquestionably!

But it is important that you use a sulfate-free shampoo as mentioned earlier for the dye to get out completely from your hair.

DISCLAIMER: If you use a shampoo that has sulfate as an ingredient then it will not let the dye get out of the hair smoothly.

Use a handful amount of shampoo and make enough lather. Make sure you are covering every corner of your scalp and massage smoothly for 5 to 10 minutes before you rinse it out under a hot shower.

If there is still some dye left in your hair, go for another round of shampoo before you move on to using a conditioner.
